UFV Cascades improve to 11-1, with 3-2 victory over Douglas College at EAC

The University of the Fraser Valley close out their most successful Fall regular season in the program’s history.  UFV defeated Douglas College Royals, 3-2, tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre to go into the holiday break sporting a 11-1 record, good for first place in the PACWEST conference by one game over VIU Mariners, at 10-2.  They are nationally ranked third in the CCAA top ten poll, this is highest the team has ever been ranked at the holiday break.  The scores from tonight’s set were 24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-3.

The game was very entertaining as the Royals came out strong and challenged the top ranked Cascades winning the first and third sets and giving UFV a hard time in the second and fourth sets with long rallies that kept UFV on their toes all night. The turning point in tonight’s match came midway through the fourth set, when UFV trailed to Douglas College by two points.  After a Cascade time out UFV rattled off 10 straight points to turn around the set and force a fifth and deciding set.  In the final set veterans Kayla Bruce, Brittany Stewart and Krista Hogewoning took control of the set and UFV won the fifth easily by 12 points, 15-3, to close out the first half in first place.

“Tonight the ladies did what they had to  for a win. I thought at times the energy was where it needed to be, shown throughout the 5th set. Kayla was unstoppable tonight, and Brittany was her great defense we have come to expect. Not all wins are pretty, but they did just enough to get the result. A good first semester,” commented UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.
