UFV Cascades sweep Mount Royal Cougars, in Calgary, winning 79-49, on Sunday afternoon

Calgary, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 79-49, sweeping the two-game weekend series, in Calgary, Alberta.  The Cascades ranked number three in the CIS top ten poll; start the season 2-0 and will host the University of the Victoria Vikes, on Friday, November 9th, in their home opener.

The Cascades picked up where they left off last night and continued to play strong basketball as they opened with a quick run and established an early lead which grew to six points after the first quarter.  UFV played a strong game on defense holding the young Cougar team to 25 first half points and in the second half holding them to single digit points, eight, in the third quarter.  “I liked our balance, tonight, particularly in the third quarter we really did a good job of sharing the ball and finding the open man,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.

UFV shot well all weekend and tonight was no different as they hit 50 percent from the floor for the game.  “Our scoring distribution was created from our willingness to find the open man.  When we play that way, we are difficult to play against,” commented Tuchscherer on the great offensive performance the Cascades displayed this weekend.

Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led the Cascades tonight with a game high 13 points and 9 rebounds. The scoring was balanced tonight as Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC, Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC and Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC all added 12 points in the win.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 10 total rebounds as UFV out rebounded MRU 48 to 31 for the game.

“Mount Royal is tough and athletic, they are going to be a tough team to play against in the near future,” said Tuchscherer remembering the early days of UFV in Canada West. UFV is in its seventh season as a member of Canada West and the CIS.
