Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team open the 2012 post season in Victoria, this Saturday, October 27th, against the Vikes. This marks UFV’s second post season appearance in three years and second overall since joining Canada West seven years ago. The Cascades go into the post season tournament with a 6-5-1 record for 19 points, they finished seventh in the highly competitive Canada West conference. Game time is set for 5PM. Eight schools out of the 13 earned post season berths. The quarterfinals are at the top four seeds with the Canada West “Final Four” to be hosted by the highest standing seed after this weekend.
The Cascades had a very productive 2012 regular season campaign, considering the team was missing two of its top veterans, due to injuries, UFV’s young recruits stepped up and played amazing all season long. The Cascades jumped out to a quick lead in Canada West winning five of its first seven matches to establish the team as post season contender. UFV’s defense had an exceptional year led by Sam Temple, a second year central defender and the dynamic duo of veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC and rookie Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC. Coach Rob Giesbrecht has two starting goalkeepers to choose from each night and when they were called upon both did not disappoint as they posted a combined 1.25 goals against average for the season.
“It’s been a good season, we’ve faced adversity with injuries to key players, but our youthful squad has responded well and we are excited to return to the postseason. Carly Neeson has had an outstanding year, she creates so much for us going forward. As well, Paige Friesen and Kara Delwo have done very well in the middle of the park. UVIC will be a tough challenge; they are a well-coached team that possesses very good athleticism as well as a very healthy balance throughout their team. But this is a challenge that we are excited to have and a challenge that we are ready to face, said Giesbrecht. ”
Veteran third year midfielder Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC was the team leader on the field, named Cascades “Player of the Match” six times in 2012, Carly finished second on the team with four goals, and four assists. Neeson also was responsible for several of the Cascades penalty kicks this season has she was able to orchestrate numerous scoring opportunities that led to infractions in the opposing teams box. Donna Pinning, a fifth year defender from Chilliwack, BC led UFV in scoring with five goals. Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC and Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC each had five helpers.
UFV goes into Saturday’s match with a perfect Canada West post season record at 2-0. In 2010, the Cascades won Canada West by defeating TWU Spartans on penalty kicks, 3-2, and defeated UBC, 2-0, in the championship game. Both games were played in Edmonton, Alberta, at the University of Alberta.
