Team finishes 6-5-1 and earns quarterfinal date with Victoria Vikes on the island
Vancouver, BC… The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team lost their final Canada West regular season match, 5-2, to the UBC Thunderbirds, tonight, in Vancouver. The Cascades finish the 2012 campaign with a 6-5-1 record good for 7th place and a trip to Victoria to face the Vikes in next wekend’s quarterfinal. The Cascades have earned a post season berth for the second time in three years. “I am very proud of the team, they battled injuries, they adjusted to a new home venue and each week they continued to improve,” commented UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
Tonight’s game was a fast pace affair helped by the wet turf the Thunderbirds wasted no time in opening up the scoring four minutes in as Rachel Sawer set Taylor Shannik who scored her fourth of the year. The Cascades came right back off the kick off and Carly Neeson, as she has done all season, found Danika Snook streaking through the T-Birds box and the Chilliwack veteran one timed her shot behind the UBC goalkeeper. The game continued to be up and down the pitch with numerous chances at both ends. UBC’s Kelly Cook would set up the game’s next goal when her 25 yard free kick was headed past Chantelle Biagioni, by Shannik, for her fifth of the campaign.
The Cascades would march down the field and after the T-Birds goalkeeper Alyssa Williamson had Paige Friesen’s shot deflect off her, Tristan Corneil would tie the game by shooting the ball into the upper right hand corner of UBC’s net. The match was tied at the break.
In the second half, UFV ‘s Carly Neeson had a great scoring opportunity in the first minute of play, however Williamson would make the save. The game continued to be a center field chess match until Sawer blasted a 30 yard shot over Biagioni’s head into the upper left hand corner of the Cascades net to give UBC back the lead. Twelve minutes later UBC would double their lead as Tamara Roughead would also blast a 40 yard shot past Biagioni in the upper corner of the Cascades net. The final UBC tally would be a penalty kick, scored by Sawer with less than five minutes remaining in the match.
“We lost to a very good UBC team tonight. I am very happy where our program is today, we are such a young team and have accomplished alot this year,” said Giesbrecht. “I am looking forward to the post season challenge next weekend.”
