Cascades fall in straight sets to Blues

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team suffered a straight-sets loss on the road to the Capilano Blues on Friday.

The Blues, ranked No. 9 in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national poll, beat the CCAA No. 15-ranked Cascades by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-12.

WVB vs VIU Jan23-15-featuredCapilano (15-6) snapped its four-game losing streak, while extending UFV’s losing streak to four games. The Cascades are 10-11 on the season, good for fifth place in the PacWest conference.

“Sometimes when a team is trying to find their way, they kind of have to hit the bottom before the find their way out,” UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr said. “I think we might have tonight. It’s not something we want to use to define the rest of our way (this season).”

The Cascades were an injury-depleted bunch, as right side Katie Peacock and libero Amy Davidson were sidelined on Friday. That necessitated a lineup shuffle – Bokenfohr shifted middle Emily Carroll into Peacock’s spot on the right and moved Monique Huber into the starting middle role vacated by Carroll.

Bokenfohr was very pleased with Huber’s performance, but the disappointing result on Friday prompted a productive post-game conversation.

“We had a long discussion after the game today, and hopefully it’s going to change the way of our future,” Bokenfohr said. “I hope that change of outlook will lead to some future results.”

The Cascades and Blues clash again on Saturday in North Vancouver (6 p.m., webcast at sportscanada.tv/pacwest).
