UFV Cascades defeat Carleton U Ravens, 59-58, end trip to Regina with two wins

Regina, Sk…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Carleton University Ravens, 59-58, to close out the Regina Invitational with a two straight wins.  The Cascades preseason record improves to 5-1 on the young season.    The Cascades next home game is against Capilano University Blues (PACWEST) next Saturday, at the EAC, game time is set for 6PM.

 

The Cascades started off quickly establishing an early lead over Carleton, UFV would lead by five points after the first quarter.  The second period belonged to the Ravens as they outscored UFV by 10 points holding the Cascades to 11 second quarter points.  Kayli Sartori led all Cascades with 11 points at the break.  Sarah Wierks grabbed five total rebounds and Aieisha Luyken recorded two steals.    

 

In the second half, the Regina fans were treated to the UFV Cascades “trademark” defense as they shut Carleton down holding the Ravens to nine points in the third quarter and 25 points for the half. 

With lead changing several times during the half, the Cascades found themself down by one point late in the game.  UFV showed its resilience down by that one point with less than ten seconds remaining Courtney Bartel steals the ball from a Raven guard and after being fouled hits the two free throws with under five seconds remaining to give UFV the win.   

 

“Nice win for us today against a very good Carleton team. It’s a good way to end the weekend getting stronger as the weekend went on,” commented UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. 
Sartori led UFV with 18 points and Nicole Wierks added 15 points and a team high 11 rebounds.  Sarah Wierks added 13 points, 9 rebounds and recorded 3 blocked shots as seven different Cascades scored in the preseason victory.    
“Really happy for the girls, they stuck together right to the end and got the gutsy win.  We can build on this weekend,” said Tuchscherer.
