Cascades regular season record hits five hundred mark in late-October
Prince George, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team defeated the UNBC Timberwolves, 2-0, in Prince George, BC to sweep the two game regular season trip up north. This marks the first time in the program’s seven year Canada West history they are playing winning (five hundred) ball this late in the season and UFV is in the hunt for one of the three Pacific Division playoffs spots with four matches remaining. This weekend also marks the first weekend UFV men’s soccer has swept a road trip and earned all possible six points available. The Cascades sport a 3-3-4 record for 13 points.
The Cascades defense continued where they left off yesterday, playing a near perfect game holding UNBC to the minimal scoring chances and controlling the Cascades side of the pitch the entire match. “We played great on defense this weekend, Colton O’Neill and Ravi Sigh anchored our back line very well and Mark (Village) earned the shutout in our net for a second straight game,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.
The Cascades opened the scoring in the first half when Connor MacMillan broke through the Timberwolves defense and beat Mitch McFarlane at the 29th minute of play. The Cascades had 21 shots on goal for a second straight game.
UFV continued to pressure the Timberwolves defense at the start of the second half and veteran captain Craig Robinson set up Justin Sekhon who scored the Cascades second goal three minutes in to clinch the road victory. The Cascades defense held UNBC in check the rest of the match to secure their third conference win of the regular season and a five hundred mark.
Village earned his third shutout of the season as he made one recorded save in the match. He faced seven UNBC shots during the game. The match did have its flare as the referee handed out six yellow cards for various infractions. The Cascades player of the match was forward Justin Sekhon, who played a large role in setting up both UFV goals today.
“Overall we played well, I am very proud of the guys,” said Errington. “I look forward to the challenge next weekend against TWU and UBC as we are still in the mix for the post season.”
