UFV Cascades sweep CBC Bearcats in weekend series, winning tonight’s match 3-1

Abbotsford, BC…The UFV Cascades women’s volleyball team defeated the CBC Bearcats, 3-2, tonight to sweep the weekend series and start the 2012-13 PACWEST regular season a perfect 2-0.  The Bearcats fall to 0-2.  The set scores were (25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 17-15).

The Cascades won the first set by four points and then fell behind as CBC won the next two sets.  Cue the comeback by a team that cameback six times last year from trailing after three sets to win all six matches.  UFV would hold off the challenge from their cross-town rivals and win the fifth and final set by two points.  Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC, UFV’s 2012 Athlete of the Year was tonight’s hero, the All-Canadian recorded team high 21 kills, 3 blocks and one ace to lead the Cascades to victory.  “Kayla capped off a great weekend putting in a solid performance. She was nearly unstoppable again tonight accounting for 21 total kills. Kira Tome was also very impressive this weekend quarterbacking the offense,” said UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.

Coach Bokenfohr was pleased with tonight’s performance, “I thought tonight we started a lot more composed and the ladies took the first set convincingly. But CBC pushed back taking the next two. At this point our senior ladies needed better execution and they delivered. The game was punctuated with a stuff block one on one by Simone Hanson. Great finish and another good result.”

The women’s volleyball team also host Camosun College Chargers next weekend on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
