UFV Cascades defeat University of Alberta Pandas, 65-55, at Regina Invitational

Regina, Sk…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Alberta Pandas, 65-55, in Regina tonight.  The Cascades even their record at the Cougars Invitational at 1-1, with one game left tomorrow against the OUA’s Carleton University Ravens. 

 

The Cascades came out strong tonight and played a very good defensive game holding the high powered Alberta offense to 14 first quarter points as they out scored the Pandas in the first by two points.  UFV’s defense continued to play well keeping the Pandas to eight points in the second quarter, while opening up a seven point halftime lead.  Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led all Cascades at the break with 10 points.

 

UFV put on a clinic in the third quarter out scoring Alberta by 13 points to open a 20 point lead.  The Pandas clawed back in the fourth quarter but UFV held onto a double digit lead until the final whistle winning by 10.  Luyken led UFV with 16 points, four steals, while playing 31 minutes tonight.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC finished with 10 points and a team high 9 total rebounds.  UFV shot 37 percent from the floor and had a remarkable 18 steals in the game.        

 

Girls did a better job of setting the pace of this game today. Thought we had a much more inspired defensive effort that created some key baskets that broke the game open a bit,” commented UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.  “Today was better than yesterday, tomorrow needs to be better than today for this weekend to be a success.”
