The 6’2” fifth-year centre from Chilliwack, B.C. racked up 21 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks in Friday’s 85-58 triumph, and notched another huge double-double the next night with 23 points and 15 boards in UFV’s 81-67 win. The results enabled the Cascades (6-4) to tighten their grip on third place in the Explorers Division.

It’s the second time this season that Wierks has posted 20-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in consecutive games, having also accomplished the feat Nov. 21-22 versus the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. She leads Canada West in rebounding at 13.9 per game, and sits second in scoring with 18.4 points per game.

Wierks also made a major leap up the Canada West all-time rebounding list on the weekend. She’s currently in third place with 881 boards collected in her illustrious career, having recently passed Leighann Doan (Calgary Dinos, 1996-2001, 874 rebounds), Trix Kannekens (Baker) (Alberta Pandas, 1976-1981, 871 rebounds) and Kelsey Blair (UBC Thunderbirds, 2002-2007, 852 rebounds).

Caleigh Dobie (Manitoba Bisons volleyball) and Iya Gavrilova (Calgary Dinos hockey) were the Canada West women’s second and third stars of the week, respectively.

Men’s hoopsters up to No. 7 in the nation

The undefeated UFV men’s basketball team moved up from No. 9 to No. 7 in the latest edition of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national rankings released on Tuesday, in the wake of a two-win weekend vs. Mount Royal.

The Cascades won 84-69 on Friday behind 22 points and eight rebounds from Kevon Parchment, and completed the sweep on Saturday by a score of 89-72 thanks to huge offensive performances by Dominique Brooks (30 points) and Nate Brown (28 points).

The Cascades boast a 24-game win streak in Canada West regular season play which extends back to November 2013, and they’re the last remaining undefeated team in the conference this season at 10-0.

Men’s wrestlers open at No. 3

The Cascade men’s wrestling team debuted at No. 3 in the first CIS wrestling rankings of the season.

The UFV men are fresh off a victory at the Golden Bear Open, hosted by the University of Alberta last Saturday. It’s the first-ever tournament title for UFV, which is in its first season of Canada West competition. Three individuals climbed to the top step of the podium – Aso Palani (61 kg), Jasmit Phulka (82 kg) and Manheet Kalhon (120 kg).

Women’s volleyballers hold steady at No. 9

UFV’s third nationally ranked program is the women’s volleyball team, which stayed at No. 9 in the latest edition of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings.

The Cascades are coming off a dominant road weekend vs. the Douglas Royals, winning in three straight sets on back-to-back nights. UFV sits third in the PacWest conference with a 9-5 record.

The Cascade men’s volleyball team, which had been ranked No. 15 last week, fell out of the rankings after losing both of their weekend games to Douglas. The Royals moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 in this week’s CCAA poll.
