Katie Peacock, Emily Carroll and the Cascades completed a weekend sweep of the Douglas Royals.

Playing on the road in New Westminster on Saturday, the Cascades improved to 9-5 in PacWest conference play with an efficient three-set triumph (25-23, 25-21, 25-19). Douglas fell to 4-10.

“It was a solid all-around team effort tonight,” said UFV assistant coach Carl Nienhuis, whose team also beat Douglas in straight sets on Friday. “We had great contributions from everybody. For the second night in a row, we had a solid defensive effort from the whole team.”

Michelle Zygmunt set the pace defensively for the CCAA No. 9-ranked Cascades, racking up 16 digs, while a strong team-wide serving performance was spearheaded by Nicole Blandford, who hammered six aces.

UFV also got a spark in the third set from middle Mandelyn Erickson, who came in and helped the Cascades finish off the Royals.

The UFV women’s volleyballers, who sit third in the PacWest, take the ferry across to Vancouver Island next weekend to face the second-place Camosun Chargers. The two teams engaged in a terrific battle in Abbotsford in the first semester, with Camosun winning in five sets both nights.

“It’s a big weekend coming up,” Nienhuis noted. “All in all, this weekend (vs. Douglas) was really good for us to get back into the swing of things.”
