Sharon Park and Halen Davis of the University of the Fraser Valley golf program have been named the PACWEST conference’s female and male golf athletes of the week, respectively, after picking up individual tournament victories on the weekend.
Park capped a phenomenal rookie season with the Cascades by winning the VIU Invitational at Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, B.C., clinching the PACWEST overall women’s individual title in the process.
The Surrey, B.C. product carded rounds of 76 on Saturday and 79 on Sunday to win the VIU event by 12 strokes over teammate Hannah Dirksen. Park, who won three of four conference tournaments this fall, claimed the aggregate title by an 18-stroke margin over Dirksen.
Davis earned his first PacWest individual tourney victory, firing rounds of 69 and 71 to finish three strokes clear of the field at the VIU Invitational.
Davis, who hails from Stanwood, Wash., is a first-year Cascade who transferred to UFV from Skagit Valley College in Washington, where he was the 2015-16 Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) men’s player of the year. By virtue of his impressive weekend performance in Parksville, he moved up from seventh to fifth in the overall standings and claimed a PACWEST all-star award.
Up next for the Cascades golfers is the PING CCAA National Championship, which run Oct. 19-21 at Fox Meadow Golf Course in Charlottetown, PEI.
