Cascades’ Nickel earns PacWest men’s volleyball athlete of the week honours

Nickel PacWest AOWConnor Nickel of the University of the Fraser Valley men’s volleyball team has been named the PacWest men’s volleyball athlete of the week.

Nickel was a difference-maker for the Cascades as they earned a home-court sweep against the College of the Rockies Avalanche last weekend. The fifth-year middle out of Abbotsford’s Mennonite Educational Institute was a dynamic blocking presence throughout UFV’s three-set win on Saturday and four-set win on Sunday, registering 12 kills and seven blocks over the two games.

“He really led the way for us through the middle of the floor,” Cascades head coach Kyle Donen said of Nickel following Saturday’s victory. “Connor was kind of everywhere when it came to the blocking side of things, and established a strong offensive presence through the middle right from the get-go.”

The Cascades volleyball teams are on the road this week, taking on the Capilano Blues on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.). Their next home games are Feb. 12-13 vs. the Douglas Royals.
