Brittney Zacharuk of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team has been named the Canada West female third star of the week.
The rookie midfielder from Delta, B.C., was honoured for her exploits in a pair of home-field victories on the weekend, in which she helped ignite an offensive breakthrough for the Cascades.
Zacharuk set up the first two goals of the game on Friday to boost UFV to a 3-2 triumph over the Manitoba Bisons. For an encore, she scored twice and added an assist in a 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday.
Zacharuk’s five-point weekend propelled her into the upper echelon of Canada West’s offensive stats leaders. With four goals and five assists on the season, she’s tied for eighth in the conference in total points.
The conference’s female first and second stars of the week, respectively, were Ali Oliverio (TWU Spartans women’s soccer) and Jenny Lam (MacEwan Griffins women’s soccer).
The Cascades (8-3-1) wrap up the regular season this weekend with a pair of important road games vs. the UBC Thunderbirds (Friday, 5 p.m.) and the Victoria Vikes (Saturday, 5 p.m.). The games will be webcast live at canadawest.tv (pay per view).
