Cascades golf program hosts spring invitational tourney this weekend

OCT.4.148..Courtesy.of.Greystoke.PhotographyThe University of the Fraser Valley men’s and women’s golf teams embark on their spring season this weekend, as they host their annual UFV Spring Invitational.

The event will be held at Chilliwack Golf Club on Saturday (1 p.m. shotgun start) and Sunday (first tee times at 8 a.m.), and will include participants from the UBC Thunderbirds, Victoria Vikes, Kwantlen Eagles, Douglas Royals and MacEwan Griffins.

The host Cascades will have their full complement of personnel, with the exception of Aaron Pauls – the Chilliwack native, who represented Canada at the World University Golf Championships last summer, is beginning his Masters studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). But he’ll be rejoining the UFV team for the Golf Canada University/College Championship, which runs May 26-29 in Guelph, Ont.

The Golf Canada event represents the culmination of the Cascades’ spring season, and according to head coach Chris Bertram, the goal of this weekend’s tourney is to build momentum towards it.

“We’re really happy to be hosting teams from CIS, NAIA and CCAA at our home course in Chilliwack,” said Bertram, the reigning PacWest and CCAA coach of the year. “We’re also excited to get the competitive juices flowing again after a bit of a layoff. Our players have been working very hard to prepare for this event as we gear up for the Golf Canada Championship.”

The Cascades are coming off a stellar fall season which saw the women’s and men’s teams sweep the PacWest conference titles, and win silver and bronze, respectively, at CCAA nationals.
