The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyballers found themselves on the wrong end of a weekend sweep at the hands of the Camosun Chargers.
The Chargers, the No. 4-ranked team in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA), were coming off a three-set triumph over the Cascades on Friday in Victoria. They emerged victorious in Saturday’s rematch, also in the minimum three sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-14).
“There were moments of similarity there,” Cascades head coach Dennis Bokenfohr said, noting that his team struggled to win points at critical junctures in both games vs. Camosun. “We just didn’t get things going this weekend and put together a complete performance. But that said, Camosun played very well this weekend. They served us very tough.”
In the second set, Cascades outside hitter Kelly Robertson went down with an ankle injury and did not return. Her absence certainly didn’t help matters, as UFV – No. 9 in the CCAA national rankings – fell to 9-7 in PacWest conference play.
The Cascades return to their home court next weekend for games vs. their longtime rivals, the Vancouver Island University Mariners. They play on Friday, Jan. 23 (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 24 (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m.) in the Student Activity Centre North Gym.
“It was one of those weekends where you go out and attempt to do the right things, but the execution just isn’t there (vs. Camosun),” Bokenfohr said. “We hope to execute better against VIU, that’s for sure.”
