University of the Fraser Valley men’s volleyball coach Kyle Donen felt his team was sharper in their second game of the weekend against the Camosun Chargers, but the end result was the same.
The Cascades dropped a three-set decision (25-20, 25-20, 25-22) to the CCAA No. 12-ranked Chargers in Victoria on Saturday afternoon, hot on the heels of a three-set defeat the night before.
It was the seventh straight loss for UFV, who fell to 6-10 in PacWest play this season.
“I think we were better tonight in certain parts of our game,” Donen analyzed. “Some similar problems we had yesterday came into play at points in this match. We executed better at the start of sets, but we’d hit a bump in the road, and that would derail us.
“Overall, I do think it was a better performance, but we need to be better than we were. We’ve lost a couple games in a row now, and we need to find a way to grind out a victory.”
For the second time in as many nights, Josh Togeretz led the Cascades in kills, registering seven. Joel Kleingeltink chipped in with five kills and seven digs, while Chris Yuill came up with a team-high 11 digs.
The Cascades face a tough test at home next weekend, as the CCAA No. 4-ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners come to town. Games run Friday, Jan. 23 (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 24 (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m.) in the Student Activity Centre North Gym.
“We’ve got to work hard in practice this week, that’s the first step,” Donen said. “They’ve got some big outside hitters that get a lot of the volume for them. Our focus has got to be on slowing them down, but also containing their other players.”
