The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team completed a weekend sweep on Saturday, dispatching the College of the Rockies Avalanche in four sets.
Coming off a three-set win the night before at the Envision Athletic Centre, the Cascades were stretched to four sets (24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21) in the rematch with their guests from Cranbrook. But head coach Dennis Bokenfohr actually felt his charges played better on Saturday, despite dropping the opening frame.
“It just didn’t happen for us in the first set,” he said. “But we had a little better court demeanour, a little better energy. It resulted in a better overall team performance.”
Outside hitter Michelle Zygmunt had a big night on both offence and defence – the W.J. Mouat Secondary grad hammered down 19 kills and came up with 15 digs, both team-high totals.
Kierra Noot (nine kills) and Emily Carroll (eight kills, three blocks) were forces in the middle, and Monique Huber’s stellar serving yielded eight aces.
The Cascades (4-0) hit the road next weekend to visit their arch-rivals, the defending PacWest champion Vancouver Island University Mariners, for a Friday-Saturday set.
“Those are definitely games where it doesn’t take much to get up to play,” Bokenfohr noted. “They’re rolling again . . . and we’re pretty excited to see how it goes. It’s our first road games of the year, and it’ll be pretty interesting to see how our girls respond.”
