Injury-riddled Cascades fall to Lancers in RBC Classic finale

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team ran out of gas in their final game of the RBC Classic preseason tournament in St. Catharines, Ont., falling 95-51 to the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon.

Nine days prior, the Lancers had required a tip-in from Brad Parker with 9.2 seconds left in regulation to edge the Cascades 57-56 at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre.

But the injury-riddled Cascades were a far different team for the rematch at Brock University’s exhibition tourney. Already missing starting centre Jasper Moedt (leg) and point guard Manny Dulay (back), their 2013-14 leading scorer Kevon Parchment sat out on Sunday with a rolled ankle.

Mackenzie Thompson, making his first start as a Cascade, played all 40 minutes and posted a team-high 12 points. Nate Brown (11 points) and Vijay Dhillon (10 points) also scored in double figures for UFV, which shot just 30 per cent from the field.

The Lancers, who converted 47.7 per cent of their field goal attempts and improved to 10-0 in the preseason, got 18 points from Khalid Abdel-Gabar and 17 from Mitch Farrell.

The Cascades finished with a 1-2 record at the RBC Classic – they beat host Brock 104-93 on Friday and fell 82-66 to the Ryerson Rams on Saturday.
