University of Fraser Valley soccer player Colton O’Neill has been named the Canada West first star of the week.
O’Neill was honoured for his heroics in helping the Cascades earn four of a possible six points against a pair of nationally ranked opponents – the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds and the No. 6 Victoria Vikes.
On Friday, the fourth-year right back from Abbotsford opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, sparking the Cascades to a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated, two-time defending national champion UBC.
On Saturday, O’Neill notched his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign in the 79th minute to lift UFV to a 1-1 draw with UVic.
The UFV soccer men improved to 5-4-1, good for third in the Pacific Division, and are on the verge of clinching a playoff berth. They wrap up the regular season on the road this week – at Trinity Western on Friday, and at UVic on Saturday.
“What’s special about Colton is, he does the same thing every game,” Cascades head coach Alan Errington said. “He’s Mr. Consistent – he never lets you down. He’s top class, such a good player. In all honesty, he shouldn’t be playing for us – he should be making a living at the game.”
O’Neill edged hockey players Deven Dubyk (Manitoba) and Nick Buonassisi (UBC) for Canada West’s top weekly honour.
The women’s three stars were, in order: Jessica King (Trinity Western soccer), Janna Ogle (Calgary Dinos volleyball) and Megan Graca (Manitoba Bisons soccer).
