With each game, the undefeated University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team seems to be getting a little bit stronger, a little bit sharper.
On Friday evening, that process of growth yielded a straight-sets victory over the College of the Rockies Avalanche at the Envision Athletic Centre.
The Cascades, now 3-0 in PacWest regular season play, prevailed 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 behind a big game from Kelly Robertson – the rookie outside hitter from Regina, Sask. racked up 15 kills and three blocks.
“The team is stepping up,” UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr enthused. “From the top down, we had good contributions . . . Different girls stepping up in different moments.”
The Cascades also got 19 digs from libero Amy Davidson, and outside hitter Michelle Zygmunt notched five aces.
Sarah Russell made a pivotal contribution in the hotly contested second set, coming off the bench to help UFV put away the Avalanche.
“She had three straight attack kills, and just settled things down when we were on a bit of a roller-coaster and not really scoring as effectively as we wanted to,” Bokenfohr said.
The Cascades and Avalanche (1-1) renew hostilities on Saturday at the Envision Athletic Centre at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
“The message for our team is, ‘Continue to grow,’” Bokenfohr said. “We’ve challenged the girls to each pick one small thing and try to improve it. I think if we continue to make small adjustments to our game for the better, it’s going to snowball and we’ll be pretty effective.”
