Cascades to defend ranking at University Golf Championships

The UFV Cascades men’s and women’s golf teams will be travelling to Winnipeg this week to play in the Canadian University Golf Championships, the largest (and most competitive) event on the Cascades annual schedule.  This year the men’s team is ranked an unprecedented first in the nation going into the tournament, while the women’s team, entering only its second year of competition, is ranked fourth.

“The Golf Canada Championships are a very big deal to us,” said program coach Chris Bertram. “It’s the deepest field of any event we play, and its fun to get out and play against some of the bigger schools in Canada that we don’t typically see throughout our regular season.  We are ready to go, and we plan to do everything we can to win this championship.”

UFV golf has spent the last 12 months amassing a formidable collection of hardware, including double PACWEST championships, double CCAA championships, a Coach of the Year award (Bertram), a PACWEST Female Golfer of the Year award (Dani Shap), and various other all-stars and acknowledgments.  Bertram and star male golfer Aaron Pauls will also be travelling to Switzerland in late June for the 2014 World University Golf Championships as part of the national team.

The national championships will take place at the Southwood Golf and Country Club from June 3-6, and are sponsored by the University of Manitoba.  The field of 155 golfers will be competing for team and individual titles in this 12th incarnation of the tournament. The Cascades will field rosters very similar to the ones that won them double CCAA championships last October.

“Our confidence is high,” said Bertram. ‘We have worked very hard as a group over the winter and spring to prepare for this event.  We have an advantage on the west coast of being able to play year round and we have done everything we can to capitalize on that.  Our players are individually and collectively playing some very solid golf right now, and I am confident we will be in the mix coming down the stretch.”

Last year the UBC Thunderbirds men won the event by 21 strokes, while the Université de Montreal Carabins emerged victorious on the women’s side.
