UFV men’s soccer takes third in annual Keg Spring Cup

The UFV men’s soccer team was back in action this weekend in the Keg Spring Cup hosted by the University of Victoria. The Cascades finished third in the field, dropping their first game to the Victoria Vikes 3-1 before vanquishing their cross-valley rivals the TWU Spartans 1-0 to take bronze.

Saturday’s game against the Vikes was far closer than it appears on paper. After one full half of action, the score was tied at 0-0, and it was only in the 50th minute that the Vikes drew first blood. UFV’s Ryan Liddiard would tie the game at 53 minutes with a free kick, but Victoria would score two quick goals less than five minutes apart to solidify their lead and advance to the final.

On Sunday the Cascades took on the Spartans in another chapter of a long rivalry. UFV looked tired due to a break-neck schedule over the last couple weeks, and the squad was only able to dress 16 bodies for the game. Despite these challenges, the Cascades were propelled to a 1-0 victory by a strike from Daniel Davidson in the 80th minute.

“I thought the team competed very well under the circumstances,” said UFV head coach Alan Errington. “The ‘Keg Classic’ is a great tournament for us to play in and gives us a platform to build towards the new season ahead.”

The UBC Thunderbirds were the eventual winners of the tournament, prevailing 3-0 over the host Vikes.
