UFV Golf has been having a year so golden that every new accomplishment can only add cherries to their sundae of success. As if double championships weren’t enough, the Golf Coaches Association of Canada (GCAC) recently voted UFV men’s golf the top team in the nation!
Of course, both the men’s and women’s team had already proven themselves champions in the CCAA, but the GCAC Top Twenty Fall Rankings includes all Canadian teams. This means that the Cascades are not only considered the best golf team in the PACWEST and the CCAA, but also the front runner among all the university teams—many of which compete against U.S. schools.
Unlike most other university sports, it is the CCAA not the CIS which represents the highest level of varsity golf in Canada. Still, many of the 72 university programs in the country have chosen to play in the U.S., which means that the cream of Canadian golf only compete directly once a year at the Golf Canada University Championships in May. The GCAC rankings decide which teams will be invited to play at the championships, and, while the Cascades have participated in the tournament before, this is the first time that they have been given the top rank.
The Cascades women, still in their inaugural season, ranked fourth on their list behind the University of Montreal Carabins, the University of Victoria Vikes, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The men claimed first by a margin of two points over the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, with the University of Victoria, the University de Laval Rouge, and the University of Toronto rounding out the top five.
“Even as the reigning Canadian National Golf Champions, it still came as a bit of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, to be given the number one ranking alongside many of the larger programs in Canada,” said Cascades head coach Chris Bertram. “Regardless, it is a gratifying to be seen as the best in the nation in the opinion of the other coaches. Now it’s up to us to continue to prove them right.”
