The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team (8-5) have downed the Thompson River University WolfPack (7-6) 74-65 to secure second place in the Pacific division. The Cascades have now won five straight games, one more win would tie them with the 2011-2012 record streak they rode into the Canada West playoffs, and eventually to a CIS Final Four finish.
TRU trailed the Cascades for most of the game, and were consistently outshot from the floor. While they narrowed the gap to a single point, 22-23, in the sixth minute of the second quarter, and to 4 points, 59-63, in the middle of the fourth, UFV managed to fend off both surges and maintain a lead. Much of the blame falls on TRU’s abysmal 1-12 three-point shooting in the second half, although the WolfPack might also point to a sensational 21 point and 10 rebound performance from Cascade Jasper Moedt.
Moedt was backed up by the usual suspects. Kadeem Willis had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kevon Parchment also had 11 points and Klaus Figueredo had 14. TRU was led by Ta’Quan Zimmerman with 20 points, and Reese Pribilsky with 12.
The Cascades were a smooth-shooting team all night long and finished 28-65 from the floor, including 8-24 from three-point land. On paper UFV is becoming a remarkable dangerous opponent, proving once again coach Adam Friesen’s ability to forge a competitive squad over the course of a single season.
“We didn’t catch TRU on their best night, but we will take this win and move on,” said Friesen. “This has been a rough place for us to play in the past and it felt nice for the guys to come out on top tonight. We’ve been taking the challenge of pushing ourselves to get better every night and tomorrow we will have to be at our very best to sweep this weekend.”
The Cascades will play the WolfPack again tomorrow at 7 pm. Watch the game online at canadawest.tv
