The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team (11-5) accomplished a miracle on hardwood tonight as they not only extended their record-breaking win streak to eight games, but also held the UBC Okanagan Heat (3-13) to 32 points in a 79-32 victory. UFV remains in second in the Pacific division of the Canada West, while the Heat remain in sole possession of the eight and last position.
The Cascades did a lot of things right tonight, while the Heat just couldn’t catch a break, going 13-58 from field goal range (including 1-18 from beyond the arc). Klaus Figueredo led the UFV squad with 14 points and six assists, bolstered by another big night from Jasper Moedt, who also had 14 points along with 11 rebounds. The Heat scraped together eight points from Yassine Ghomari and seven from Landry Ndayitwayeko, but overall endured a difficult night.
It would have been hard to believe back in September that the Cascades could possibly win eight straight conference games with a rebuilt roster and several important departures, but teams coached by Adam Friesen seem to require a suspension of disbelief. Not only have the Cascades destroyed their previous record of six straight wins this weekend, they’ve also set a new Canada West record for fewest points allowed in a single game!
The previous record was 46, also set during a UBC Okanagan game in 2013. Tonight the Heat scored only 12 points in the second half, and only 3 points in the fourth quarter. The Cascades, by contrast, scored 29 points in the fourth, and received scoring throughout the night from nine of the 10 players on the roster.
“Great team win,” said Friesen. “Our energy was high and we shared the ball the best we have all season.” The Cascades finished with 27 assists and 12 steals.
UFV will take the court at 8 pm on Jan. 31 against the University of Regina Cougars at the EAC. The Heat will also play on Friday, hosting the University of Winnipeg at home.
