Abbotsford – Courtney Bartel of the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team and Jasper Moedt of the men’s basketball team are the recipients of the Abbotsford Heat / UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week.
Bartel, a fifth year guard from Chilliwack, B.C., is one of three Chilliwack Secondary graduates on the Cascades roster. She has averaged 23.2 minutes and 6.4 points per game this season, but had 13 points and nine rebounds in Friday’s road loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen. Her performance was a bright spot amidst a tough defeat for a veteran Cascades squad.
“She had a lot of energy on both ends of the floor,” said head coach Al Tuchscherer, “and she knocked down some key shots for us.”
Jasper Moedt, a fourth year forward from Abbotsford, B.C., has been a bastion of the Cascades defense all year long. Averaging 35 minutes a game, as well as 7 rebounds and 12 points, Moedt trails only Kevon Parchment amongst Cascades players in each of these categories. During UFV’s clash with the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, he exploded with 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 2 blocks in a game that Cascades head coach Adam Friesen claimed “we couldn’t have won without him.”
“Jasper had a breakout performance and I’m looking forward to seeing how much momentum he can carry forward for the rest of the year,” said Friesen. “He controls the paint, guards the big men, grabs rebounds, and anchors the defence. We wouldn’t have won Saturday without him. We legitimately just ran down the floor and passed to him in the post, every time.”
Both recipients will receive a ticket to any Abbotsford Heat game of their choosing.
