The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team spent the last few days of 2013 in Windsor, Ontario, playing in the Lancers Holiday Classic tournament. The seventh-ranked nationally Cascades competed against the University of Windsor Lancers (second-ranked nationally), the University of Guelph Gryphons, and the UQAM Citadins.
The Cascades opened the tournament on Dec. 28 with a 66-39 loss to a tough Windsor team. Windsor went on a 17-2 run in the second quarter, and forced 24 turnovers from UFV throughout the night.
UFV played a second game on the 29th against Guelph, and achieved a comfortable 82-66 victory. The Cascades lead 23-7 at the end of the first quarter, and while the Gryphons cut the lead to nine in the third, a seven point streak by Kayli Sartori at the end of the quarter also ended Guelph’s hopes of recovery.
On Dec. 30, UFV was given another crack at the Lancers, but fell to the formidable Windsor squad once again, 63-43. Despite the similarity in score, this game was much closer than the first one. Windsor lead by just six heading into the fourth quarter, and the Cascades were given several chances to take a lead against one of the best teams in the country.
The Cascades will play their next game on January 10 at the University of Winnipeg.
