Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeat the University of Calgary Dinos, 71-56, in the opening weekend of Canada West, CIS basketball.  The Cascades record is now 2-0, the team will go on the road next weekend to face the University of Victoria Vikes in regular season action.  The Dinos record in the Prairie Division, of Canada West, falls to 0-2.

The Cascades would open day two of the regular season fighting to keep the game close.  The Dinos would open scoring and continue to challenge the young Cascade team.  UFV would take a short two point lead with three minutes left in the first quarter, but subsequent pressure would cause the Dinos to take over with a two-point lead going into the second.  UFV would struggle but went on a six point run to shorten up a 10-point deficit at the half.  Manjodh Dulay, Surrey, BC led the Cascades in scoring with 12 points and Klaus Figueredo, St. Albert, AB, added six as UFV shot 29 percent from the floor.  Kadeem Willis and Kevon Parchment, both from Toronto, ON, and Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC, would tie for four rebounds each.  Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson, Winnipeg, MB, led the Dinos with 12 points.

The second half opened with the Dinos continuing to hold onto their slim lead until three minutes into the fourth quarter when Parchment received a technical foul.  From there the Cascades rallied to create the best quarter of the season thus far.  The UFV offense went on a 10 point run to seal the Dinos fate by creating momentum and wearing down the Calgary team.  Parchment, Figueredo, and Dulay were the key offensive weapons, at the line and on the three point arch, to give the Cascades the win.  Dulay ended the night with 23 points, Figueredo with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Parchment with 12 points and nine rebounds.  UFV outrebounded Calgary 44 to 31.  Ogungbemi-Jackson led the Dinos at the end of the night at 19 points.  Philip Brandt, Billings, MT, led the Dinos with 14 rebounds.

Head Coach Adam Friesen was pleased with his team’s showing tonight.  “We have a team that is competitive, there was great team bonding tonight”, he commented. “I am looking forward to the rest of the year to see how far we can go”.
