Abbotsford, BC….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the MRU Cougars, 79-35, in Canada West regular season action at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades, nationally ranked 3rd in the CIS top ten poll, now sport a 5-0 record and lead the Pacific Division of Canada West. The Cougars fall to 1-4 in the Pacific Division.
The Cascades continue to dominate their Canada West opponents at home as they held the opposition to under 40 points for a third straight game at the EAC. Cascades gave up an incredible 35 points to MRU the entire game. Holding the Cougars to just 15 second half points. UFV forced 31 MRU turnovers and recorded 21 steals as a team. Coach Al Tuchscherer was able to play his entire team again tonight. The bench continues to gain valued experience in the early part of the regular season. “Our bench was fantastic tonight. Played the game with a lot of energy and hunger. It was exciting to see them really want to prove themselves tonight. That energy is going to be important tomorrow and really down the road for us,” said Tuchscherer.
Shayna Litman, Coquitlam, BC and Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led UFV with 11 points each as 11 different Cascades scored at least one point in the victory. Sarah Wierks also pulled down a team leading 13 rebounds as UFV out rebounded MRU 45 to 22 for the game.
The Cascades shot 47 percent from the floor for the game as MRU shot 18 percent. Candice Campbell led MRU with 7 points in the loss to UFV.
The Cascades and Cougars will play again tomorrow night, at the EAC, at 5pm.
