Victoria, BC… The University of Victoria Vikes, nationally ranked 4th in the CIS top ten poll, defeated the UFV Cascades, 74-55, in Canada West regular season action at the McKinnon Gym, in Victoria, BC. The Cascades record falls to 2-2 in the Pacific Division while Victoria’s improves to a perfect 4-0.
The home team Vikes open the game on a seven point run and never looked back as UFV kept the game close but could not recover from the early deficit. The Cascades trailed by five going into the second quarter but the Vikes held UFV to 14 points in the quarter as UFV shot 40 percent from the floor at the break. Klaus Figueredo, Calgary, Alberta led the Cascades with 9 points and Aaron McGowan, Toronto, Ontario added 8 points. The Vikes top scorer was Chris McLaughlin with 14 points.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams scored 12 points and Victoria held onto their eight lead going into the final frame, where the more experienced Victoria team out scored a tired Cascade team by 11 points to clinch the 19 point victory. UFV was led by Figueredo with 18 points as UFV shot 42 percent for the half and 41 percent for the game. McGowan had a UFV career high 14 point night as the two scored 50 percent of UFV points in the loss to Victoria.
Terrell Evans scored 28 points for Victoria, McLaughlin added 25 points as Victoria had nine different players score at least two points in the game. Victoria out rebounded UFV 34 to 22 for the game.
“We played well for three quarters tonight. They (Victoria) pulled away from us in the fourth. Lot of lessons learned as we go forward,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen.
