Abbotsford, BC… The UFV Cascades student-athletes went walking through Abbotsford on Thursday, October 31st, knocking on doors for donations of non-perishable items for the Abbotsford Food Bank. Filling 25 boxes with food, the project was deemed a success. The walk and knock was headed by Alexa McCarthy, a fifth year Kinesiology major from Chilliwack, and members of the 10 Cascades varsity teams. The student-athletes collected 21 boxes last year in late October.
“It’s one thing to excel on the court and in the classroom but it’s pretty special that this many of our student-athletes would spend their Halloween doing something like this. It speaks to the quality of the student-athletes and the type of people that we have at UFV. This was our most successful Walk n’ Knock so far and we are excited to support the Abbotsford food bank,” commented McCarthy.
Boxes will be set up for donations in the Envision Athletic Centre lobby in Abbotsford at all remaining basketball and volleyball home games until Monday, December 2nd. Anyone wishing to donate can drop off non-perishable goods at the EAC or go directly to the Abbotsford Food Bank at www.abbotsfordfoodbank.com
“I am very proud of our student-athletes for all their hard work in this project. I specially want to thank Alexa for her dedication to the Abbotsford Food Bank and all her organizational skills in setting up these very important community related programs,” said UFV athletic director Rocky Olfert.
