Men’s Soccer Playoff

Vancouver, BC…The University of Britsch Columbia Thunderbirds, number one ranked team in the CIS, defeated the UFV Cascades, 2-0, tonight, in the Canada West semi-final at David Sidoo Field.  UBC now advances to the Canada West gold medal match and a trip to the CIS national championships in Fredericton, NB, hosted by the UNB Varsity Reds.  The Cascades will face the University of Victoria Vikes, in the Canada West bronze medal match, on Sunday, November 3rd at 11am, at UBC.  This will be UFV’s first opportunity in the eight years affiliated with conference to earn a medal.

The Cascades played a tremendous game tonight facing the defending CIS national champions, whose only lost in two years, was to UFV on opening weekend, 1-0, back in September. UFV played a strong game in the back holding a powerful Thunderbird team in check for most of the night.  UFV gave up a goal late in the first half (36th minute) and then continued to pressure UBC for the tying goal.  The Cascades had several golden opportunities to tie the match but UBC held its ground and prevented the Cascades strikers from scoring that equalizer.  The Thunderbirds second goal came in referees added time to clinch the victory over the Cascades.

“I am very proud of the team, they came out and played a very good game against the best team in our country,’ commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.  “We will prepare for Sunday as we have an opportunity to earn the program’s first conference medal.”

Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC made five saves in his first Canada West semi-final appearance.  The Thunderbirds outshot UFV 13 to 5 for the game.  The Cascades Ethan Claibourne-Collins was named UFV’s “player of the match” for his work defending against the UBC midfielders and keeping them off the scoreboard tonight.
