Abbotsford, BC….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team were defeated by the MRU Cougars, 62-60, tonight in Canada West regular season action. The Cascades record falls to 2-3 in the Pacific Division while the Cougars improves to 3-2.
The Cascades came out flat tonight shooting 25 percent in the first quarter and falling behind their Calgary opponents early and trailing after the first quarter by three points. UFV’s best quarter in the game, came in the second as they outscored Mount Royal by seven points to go into the break up by four points.
The Cougars came out of the locker room strong and scored the first five points of the half to regain the lead. The lead would change hands six different times in the quarter before Mount Royal would head into the final quarter up by one point. Again the lead would see saw back and forth before MRU would take the lead with under one minute remaining in regulation time and hold on for the two point victory.
“Congratulations to the Cougars for their effort tonight they out hustled us in the last few minutes of the game. We will regroup for tomorrow night’s game against them,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen who’s team shot 31 percent from the floor the entire night.
Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC led UFV with 17 points, while Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario scored 14 points and pulled down a team leading 13 rebounds. Awet Abraha led MRU with 16 points and Denk Awak added 11 points and 13 rebounds in the victory over UFV. The Cougars out rebounded UFV 41 to 36 for the game.
The Cascades and Cougars will play again tomorrow night, at the EAC, at 7pm.
