UFV Cascades women’s basketball team improve to 3-0, with 68-55 victory over Victoria Vikes

Victoria, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Victoria Vikes, 68-55, in Canada West regular season action, at the McKinnon Gym, on the campus of Victoria.  The Cascades improve their Pacific Division record to 3-0, while Victoria’s falls to 1-2.

The Cascades started strong by scoring early in tonight’s game as they quickly built up a double digit lead of 10 points after the first quarter.  The Cascades continued to build on their lead and play great defense holding the Vikes to 25 halftime points.  UFV would lead by 12 points at the break.  The Cascades shot an amazing 50 percent from the floor in the half as Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 10 points.  Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC added 8 points at the break.  Jenna Bugiardini led all Vikes with a 9 point performance as Victoria shot  33 percent. 

In the second half, the Vikes held UFV to nine points in the third quarter, as they came within eight points of UFV as the final quarter started.  UFV would out score the Vikes by five points to earn the 13 point victory.  UFV shot 43 percent in the second half as Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 21 points and 7 rebounds.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC, Luyken and Bartel each contributed with 12 points each.  Jessica Renfrew led all Vikes with 18 points.

UFV recorded 7 steals and forced 16 Vike turnovers in the their first road victory of the year.

“Started and finished game well.  We didn’t do a great job through the middle 2 quarters where Victoria really dictated with their energy and hustle.  It was fun to play them in their home opener the crowd was excited and it was a good challenge for us to overcome. Looking forward to the rematch tomorrow,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.   

The Cascades and Vikes will play again tomorrow night at the McKinnon Gym, game time set for 5pm.
