MacMillan and the Cascades shut out in Saskatoon today.

Saskatoon, SK….. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s soccer team, ranked 8th in the CIS top ten poll, defeated the UFV Cascades, 2-0, this afternoon at Saskatoon’s PotashCorp Park.  The Huskies Prairie Division leading record improves to 8-3-1 for 25 points, while the Cascades record falls to 4-7-1 good for 13 points.  UFV currently still holds the third and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division, but the TWU Spartans only trail UFV by 3 points and have two matches at hand.  UFV closes out the 2013 regular season next weekend with games against Calgary and Lethbridge. The Cascades have a bye in the final weekend of the year.  If UFV can sweep their games next weekend they will be in the driver’s seat for that post season berth, any negative results and TWU could overtake UFV for that playoff berth.  UFV won the regular season series with TWU on goal differential, 5-4, each team won a regular season match against the other team.

The Cascades played a perfect first half holding the high powered Saskatchewan offense in check, the back four and veteran goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC were on top of their game as they shutout the Huskies.  Offensively UFV created several scoring chances but the Huskies goalkeeper Michal Bandula, Saskatoon, SK turned away the five shots on goal by UFV in the first half.  The half ended evenly as UFV ‘s attack produced five corner kicks and shots, the Cascades just could not put one behind Bandula.

The second half belonged to the more experienced Huskie team as they outshot UFV 11 to 5 and created numerous chances to score.  Their hard work paid off in the 54th minute of play as Brett Levis, Saskatoon, SK set up Luigi Bekwayo, Saskatoon, SK with what would turn out to be the winning goal, beating Village short side.  Saskatchewan would add an insurance goal in the 88th minute by Bobbi Nicholat, Saskatoon, SK.

The Cascades had one golden opportunity to tie the match in the 66th minute as Connor MacMillan, Chilliwack, BC’s shot just sailed over the Huskie net off a perfectly placed corner kick by Ethan Claibourne-Collins, Chilliwack, BC.  Village recorded three saves in the match as he faced  14 Huskie shots.  The Cascades “player of the game” was veteran defender Colton O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC for his solid defensive work on the Huskie forwards.
