Winnipeg, Manitoba…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 4-0, at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The Cascades regular season record improves to 4-4-3 for 15 points and clinches a post season berth for the second straight year and third in four years.  The Cascades are still in a battle for 7th place overall with the University of Regina Cougars, at 14 points, both have one match remaining tomorrow night.  UFV will close out the regular season against the Manitoba Bisons, 1-6-4, before preparing for the Canada West quarterfinals next weekend.

The Cascades played a strong match tonight controlling the majority of play and keeping Winnipeg from mounting any real offensive treats.  The Cascades Jade Palm, Powell River, BC opened the scoring in the first half, at the 1th minute, off a Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC corner kick.  UFV would go into the half up by one goal.  In the second half, the Cascades veteran forward Shelby Beck, Langley, BC would record a natural hat trick by scoring goals at the 46th, 64th and 90th minutes of the half.  Beck was named the Cascades “player of the game” for her goal scoring prowess.  UFV out shot Winnipeg 26 to 8 as the Wesmen’ goalkeeper Margo Henry, Winnipeg, Manitoba made 9 saves on the night.

Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC record three saves over the first 60 minutes of the match and then gave way to Emily Harold, Langley, BC making her CIS debut in UFV’s net, recording one save over the final 30 minutes of play.

“It was a good performance, we scored early and just couldn’t get the all-important second goal. We were assertive in our attack throughout the match and created many high quality scoring chances. Shelby Beck was an attacking force off the bench in the second half and was able to make the game comfortable for us,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
