Klim recorded three saves for the shutout win tonight.
Chilliwack, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 5-0, in Canada West regular season action, tonight at Townsend Park, in Chilliwack, BC. The Cascades improve their record to 3-3-2 for 11 points and move up to 7th place in the Canada West standings. The top eight teams earn a berth in the post season tournament. The Pronghorns record falls to 0-7-2 for 2 points.
The Cascades played a strong game tonight controlling the majority of play all evening. UFV dominated the middle of the pitch led by first year midfielder Carley Radomski, Langley, BC who was named UFV’s “player of the match.” Radomski set up the Cascade strikers all night with opportunities to score. Early on UFV was frustrated by excellent play by the Pronghorns starting goalkeeper
Myriah Marino, Coaldale, Alberta who kept the match scoreless with several brilliant saves. But UFV was too strong on this evening and scored the first of five goals at the 36th minute when Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC scored off a direct kick to put UFV on the board. The Cascades would double their lead before halftime as the Lethbridge knocked the ball into their own net off a Corneil corner kick at the 45th minute.
“We started the game well, yet couldn’t get that first breakthrough until late in first half off two wonderfully struck set-pieces by Tristan Corneil. I was proud of our resilience and assertive mentality to fight through the frustration of not being able to score,” commented UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht on his team’s first half performance.
The Cascades continued to dominate the in the second half as they moved the ball around the park well and kept the Lethbridge defense busy with numerous shots on goal. Lethbridge changed keepers at the break and Taylor Thomas, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan was welcomed five minutes into the half when Jade Palm, Powell River, BC found Shelby Beck, Langley, BC all alone in front of the Pronghorns net and Beck made no mistake in scoring the team’s third goal of the night.
UFV continued to pressure Lethbridge and their hard work resulted in two more Cascade goals by Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC in the 62nd minute and Radomski in three minutes later to close out the scoring.
“At the half the team was challenged to stay on their front foot and finish off our opponent. The girls responded very well to the challenge and put the game away early in second half,” said Giesbrecht.
Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC recorded three saves in earning her third shutout of the season. The five goals tonight was the highest total so far this season. The team record is 7 against UNBC last year.
“We had a lot of very good performances today: (Carley) Radomski owned the middle of the park and scored another great goal, Corneil had lethal service on set-pieces, and Neeson was buzzing around the attacking third all night and scored an outstanding goal. We also had Paige Friesen and Shelby Beck with very effective performances off the bench.”
“All in all I am proud that our young team showed the maturity and a level commitment needed to win these potentially tricky games.”
Cascade Note: There is no place like Chilliwack, the women’s soccer team is 2-0-1 at home this year. The Cascades have two more home games next weekend against Saskatchewan and Regina.
