Bellingham, Washington…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades ended their preseason exhibition schedule with a thrilling 93-89 victory over the Western Washington University Vikings (GNAC-NCAA), in Bellingham, WA on Sunday. The Cascades finish the preseason with a 6-0 record as they prepare for their home opener against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night at the Envision Athletic Centre.
The game played under NCAA rules (two 20 minute halves) was a close affair from opening whistle to closing with WWU jumping out to a six point lead at the half, 41-35. In the second half UFV would even the score and take a late lead on two free throws by Nataliia Gavryliuk, Kiev, Ukraine. The Vikings would tie the game at 78 all with four seconds remaining to force overtime. In the extra frame UFV never trailed as they scored the first three points of overtime and held on for the four point victory as Kaylie Sartori, Chilliwack, BC hit two game clinching free throws for four seconds left on the clock.
Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 17 points as five different Cascades were in double figures. UFV shot 42 percent from the floor for the game. Sarah also led UFV with 15 total rebounds as the Cascades out rebounded 51 to 46 for the game.
