Moedt’s 16 points led UFV to 70-69 win against Seattle Mountaineers
Abbotsford, BC….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Seattle Mountaineers, 70-69, in a preseason exhibition game at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Mountaineers are a non-profit basketball organization in the Seattle, Washington area that runs community organized clinics and camps for the youth of Seattle.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early double digit lead and led by ten points, 27-17 after the first quarter. In the second, Seattle used the fast break to open a 17 point lead at the intermission. UFV was led by Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC with eight points at the break. UFV shot 25 percent from the floor in the half.
Cue the halftime speech by head coach Adam Friesen as UFV opened the second half on a 16-0 run to pull within one point at 45-44 midway through the third quarter. The Cascades would take the lead on a Klaus Figueredo, Calgary, AB three point shot with four minutes remaining and never look back as they held the Mountaineers to five third quarter points. Seattle made it interesting down the stretch scoring the last six points of the game, but UFV held on for an impressive comeback victory, 70-69. UFV shot an amazing 60 percent in the second half from the floor.
Moedt led all Cascades with 16 points, Aaron McGowan, Toronto, Ontario added 15 points and 5 assists in the victory over Seattle. Jason Waltman, Seattle, WA-Northwest University, led all Mountaineers with a game high 20 point performance.
“We are coming together as team, it was obvious in the third quarter when we played great defense which led to our offensive explosion,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen, on his team’s comeback in the second half.
