Sarah Wierks scored 21 tonight in UFV’s win over Western U
London, Ontario…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Western University Mustangs (OUA West) 82-71, tonight in preseason action at Alumni Hall, in London, Ontario. The Cascades preseason exhibition record improves to 2-0 with one game left on the three game Southern Ontario road trip.
The Cascades started strong scoring the game’s first six points before Western would catch them right before the end of the first quarter as the teams were tied at 20 going into the second quarter. This was the quarter that made the difference in the game. UFV would hold Western to 17 points while outscoring the Mustangs by 10 to take a 47-37 lead into the locker room. UFV shot an impressive 54 percent from the floor in the first half as Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 16 points at the break. Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC added 8 points.
In the second half, UFV would outscore Western by one point, 35-34, as both teams put on a defensive display. The Cascades shot 33 percent in the half, while holding Western to 39 percent from the floor. Sarah Wierks finished with a game high 21 points and 8 rebounds. Sartori added 16 points and 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC as the other Cascade in double figures with 11 points. UFV out rebounded Western 45 to 35 for the game.
“Better effort tonight from the team. Built on some things from last night and had better stretches of what we want to do. Defence still needs some work, but we can get into practice and work through some of those things,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.
