Victoria, BC….The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the UFV Cascades, 2-0, tonight in pouring rain in Victoria, BC. The Cascades Canada West regular season record falls to 2-3-1 for 7 points, while the Vikes improve to 4-2-0 for 12 points.
The Cascades played a strong first half this evening as they tested the veteran Vike defense with numerous early shots on goal. The Cascades continued to pressure Victoria forcing four corner kicks where they narrowly missed scoring the game’s first goal in the ten minute mark of the match. UFV’s rookie midfielder Carley Radomski, Langley, BC and veteran forward Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC each tested the Vikes’ goalkeeper Tanya Jones as they were able to make runs and take point blank shots. Neeson’s second shot almost was deflected into the Vikes net by a Victoria defender. UFV played a very spirited first half despite the weather.
The Vikes also were busy testing the Cascades goalkeeper, Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC who made eight saves on the night to be named UFV’s “player of the game.” “Kayla Klim was outstanding in goal, she made a couple great saves in the second half as we were pushing players forward. Carly Neeson was effective in midfield and generated many positive attacks especially in the first half,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
The second half was as exciting as the first with both teams creating numerous offensive chances to score. Danica Kump, Surrey, BC and Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC each had golden opportunities to score but the Vikes defense kept UFV off the score board on this night. Jones made two saves to earn the shutout in Victoria’s net.
The Vikes two goals were scored by Lindsay Hoetzel and Jaclyn Sawicki.
“I thought we were really good in first 35-40 minutes, but then broke down late in the first half. In the second half we struggled at getting back into our attacking rhythm and failed to create quality goal scoring chances,” commented Giesbrecht.
