Edmonton, Alberta….The University of Alberta Pandas defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 4-1, this afternoon, at Foote Field, in Edmonton, Alberta. The Pandas Canada West regular season record improves to 4-0-1 for 13 points, while the Cascades record falls to 1-2-1 for 4 points.  UFV currently sits in 9th place in the conference, the top eight teams earn post season berths.

The Cascades started slowly in their first out-of-province road match of the 2013 season.  The first place Pandas came out and attacked UFV’s young defense right from the opening whistle.  The Pandas were able to create several early scoring chances, the Cascades goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC stood on her head and made two key saves to keep the match scoreless.  Alberta kept the pressure on and it paid off at the ninth minute of play as Rebecca Brandt, Edmonton, Alberta stole the ball off a Cascade defender and beat Klim to give the home side a one goal lead.

Alberta continued to look for a second goal and keep UFV off balance, and that goal came three minutes later when Jessie Candlish, Edmonton, Alberta beat the Cascade defense to a loose ball and slipped it past a stretch out Klim to give Alberta that two goal cushion.

Coach Rob Giesbrecht made several changes after the second goal, one substitution that seemed to spark UFV was the addition of Amanda Carruthers, Calgary, Alberta.  The first year forward started to create some space for Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC and Carley Radomski, Langley, BC who quickly started to test the Panda defense and goalkeeper Kelti Biggs, Spruce Gove, Alberta.  The Cascades came to life in the final 15 minutes of the half and off a corner hit the Panda cross bar right before half.

As the second half started Alberta went back on the attack scoring a quick goal by Julia Ignacio,  Edmonton, Alberta to give the Pandas a three goal cushion.  Alberta would score 15 minutes later as Ignacio and Brandt set up  Paula Dadensky, Stettler, Alberta.  The Cascades came alive in the later stages of the game and Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC set up Danica Kump, Surrey, BC who beat Biggs to give UFV some momentum for tomorrow’s match against the Mount Royal Cougars, in Calgary.

Biggs made seven saves in the victory while Klim recorded six.  Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC was named the UFV “player of the game.”   “Danika ran miles for us today and put on another solid effort,” commented Giesbrecht.

“Started softly and slowly and were punished for it. We had some good spells and created some good chances; however we were unable to create enough quality chances to get back into it. We were denied by the woodwork a few times; but that happens, in this game you earn your good fortune and today we didn’t do enough,” said Giesbrecht on today’s performance.
