Vancouver, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team tied the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 1-1, tonight at David Sidoo Field, in Vancouver, BC.  The Cascades Canada West record improves to 1-0-1 for 4 points, while the Thunderbirds record improves to 0-0-2 for 2 points.

The Cascades played a very strong and near perfect defensive game tonight.  The team followed Coach Rob Giesbrecht’s game plan to a tee holding the veteran Thunderbirds at bay all evening.  Led by second year goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC and very tough back seven led by center midfielder Carley Radomski, Langley, BC, UFV controlled the majority of play in the first half and when UBC went on the offensive attack, the Cascades kept the play to the outside and any shots by UBC where from the wings and not direct shots in front of Klim.

The “tone” of the game was created in the first minute as fifth year veteran Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC stole the ball off a UBC defender and the TBirds’ keeper Alyssa Williamson, Langley, BC had to make a great save off Snook’s shot to keep the match scoreless.  UFV kept the pressure on UBC’s defense though out the first 20 minutes of the match and were almost rewarded in the 20th minute as Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC had a golden opportunity to open the scoring, only to be stopped by Williamson again.  Midway through the half, UFV gave up several corner kicks to UBC but the Cascade defense held its ground and cleared both scoring attempts from harms’ way.

UFV finally broke the scoreless match in referees time, as Tristan Corneil, a second year midfielder from Surrey, BC, shot a rocket from 35 yards out at the UBC goal and the ball was deflected by a TBird defender past Williamson into the UBC net to give the Cascades a one goal advantage at the break.

The second half started with UFV continuing to go on the offense and pressure UBC’s back four.  The Cascades create numerous opportunities to score the second goal of the match, including a brilliant run by Karlee Pedersen, Abbotsford, BC down the left side of the field where her shot beat Williamson to the right side, but just missed hitting the corner cross bar and falling into the net. The Cascades had three corner kicks in a row off Pedersen’s shot, but UBC’s defense cleared each attempt away.

With ten minutes remaining UBC counter attacked after another UFV offensive attempt to score, and on this rush the TBirds made no mistake as Janine Frazao, Port Moody, BC fed Madison Guy, Langley, BC a perfect pass and Guy beat Klim to tie the match with eight minutes remaining.  The goal sparked UBC and Klim made two quick saves on TBird attempts to take the lead with less than three minutes remaining.

The match ended in a draw.  For UFV it is their first result against the Thunderbirds since they beat UBC in the Canada West Championship Match, in November, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta, 2-0.

Radomski  was named the Cascades “Player of the Match.”  “I thought Carley (Radomski) was outstanding in midfield, she was strong on the ball and a physical force.  Dayle Jeras was a rock in the back and had her best game. Carly Neeson was effective on the ball and Danica Kump, Lana Rockhill and Danika Snook all ran miles for us in attacking positions,” commented Giesbrecht on the result tonight.

UFV travels to Langley, BC tomorrow night to face the winless defending CIS National champions TWU Spartans, who fall to 0-1-1 after losing 2-1 to the University of Victoria Vikes tonight at home.  “Proud of the girls for earning a very tough point against a quality UBC team.    We battled hard and were minutes away from collecting all three points. We can take a lot of positives from today as well as we still have some work to do,” said Giesbrecht.  “We need to pick ourselves up and prepare ourselves for another tough battle tomorrow night.”
