Kamloops, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s golf team defeated the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, 5.5 to 4.5 to capture their fourth straight Coquihalla Cup title.  The UFV Cascades women’s golf team made their CCAA/PACWEST debut defeating the TRU Wolfpack 4-0, to capture their first Coquihalla Cup.  The Coquihalla Cup as played at the Dunes, in Kamloops, BC.

The Cascades veteran Aaron Pauls, Chilliwack, BC shared the men’s Most Valuable Player honors with TRUs Brent Pound. The tournament MVP trophy has been renamed in the memory of Connor Richey, a former member of the UFV Cascades men’s golf team who passed away suddenly last month.   Aaron and Brent tied in the skills competition and Aaron’s win in his Sunday singles match clinched the Cup for UFV.

“Connor was a great young man who exemplified dedication to improving his golf game.  His smile and his love of life were contagious, and he always loved to laugh. The Connor Richey award is meant to go to players who share these attributes and certainly Brent Pound (TRU) and Aaron Pauls (UFV) fit the bill,” said UFV head coach Chris Bertram.

The women also played for first time this year (separate category but for the same cup) and UFV went undefeated. Dani Shap won the skills competition and her Sunday singles victory sealed the win for the ladies.

The Cascades start PACWEST regular season play this coming weekend in Nanaimo, BC as the VIU Mariners host the first of four conference tournaments to determine who wins the PACWEST Championship.

“The Coquihalla Cup proved to be a stern test for all the players this year.  I came in expecting big things from our UFV  men and women, and while we came out on top in the end, Bill had the Wolf Pack ready to play. Kudos to the great things he is doing with the golf program at TRU,” commented Bertram.
