Colton O’Neill and the Cascades had their hands full with UNBC tonight, in a 1-1 tie, in Chilliwack.
Chilliwack, BC….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades improved their Canada West regular season record to 4-3-1 for 13 points with a 1-1 tie tonight against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack, BC. The Timberwolves record improves to 1-3-2 for 5 points.
The UFV Cascades men’s soccer team ran into a very determined UNBC Timberwolves team tonight as UNBC earn its first Canada West point, against UFV, by playing a very tight defensive game. UFV peppered the Timberwolves with a school record 30 shots on goal tonight, but second year goalkeeper Tyrone Venhola, Abbotsford, BC put on a clinic in the UNBC net making numerous saves on point blank shots, recording 13 saves and only being beat once in the match at the 68th minute by UFV’s veteran midfielder Justin Sekhon, Abbotsford, BC.
The Cascades played a strong game controlling the middle of the park, making great runs down by wings and winning the majority of loose balls all night long. The Cascades just could not score on this night. They had several great opportunities off their corner kicks as Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC and Connor O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC served several great balls into the box, but UFV’s forwards could not convert those balls into goals.
The Timberwolves should patience all night and not panicking when UFV were taking numerous shots at their net especially right before halftime and at the start of the second half. Their patience did pay off with six minutes remaining in the match as Tofa Fakunle, Calgary, Alberta made a run down the left wing and crossed the ball into the middle of Cascade box where it deflected to Cheona Edzerza, Prince George, BC who made no mistake in beating the Cascades goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC to tie the match at one goal each.
The Cascades Sahib Phagura, Abbotsford, BC was named UFV’s “player of the game” for his excellent play on defense controlling the Cascades back line and keeping the majority of UNBC shots from getting through to Village. Venhola was named UNBC’s “player of the game” for his heroics in the Timberwolves net.
“Full marks to UNBC for playing hard all night. I am pleased we created so many offensive opportunities, but disappointed with the fact we were only able to convert one of our 30 shots into a goal,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.
