Calgary, Alberta….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 2-0, in Canada West regular season action, in Calgary, Alberta this afternoon. The Cascades improve their Pacific Division record to 2-2-0 for 6 points, while the Cougars record drops to 1-1-1 for 4 points in the Prairie Division.
The Cascades came out strong and played 90 minutes of soccer today erasing their one-goal loss in Winnipeg on Thursday night. UFV established control of the match early and kept the pressure on the MRU goalkeeper Kamil Zielinsky, Calgary, Alberta from opening whistle to closing. UFV’s hard work started to pay off midway through the half and in the 22nd minute fourth year defender Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC scored his first career CIS goal to give the Cascades the lead. UFV would continue to pressure the back line of Mount Royal and six minutes later James Najman, Surrey, BC found Kree Byrne, Abbotsford, BC open in front of the Cougar net and made no mistake scoring his first of the year.
The Cascades two-goal lead held up as Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC made five saves to record his second Canada West shutout of the campaign.
“I was very proud of the team today. They played 90 minutes and rebounded well from Thursday’s loss,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.
