Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the UNBC Timberwolves, 2-0, in the Canada West regular season opener for both schools.  The game was played at Townsend Park, in Chilliwack, BC before 250 fans.

The Cascades came out strong and dominated the match early.  Led by veteran midfielder Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC the Cascades offense moved the ball well in the early minutes as they kept the majority of play in the Timberwolves side of the pitch. UFV would open the scoring 12 minutes in as Jade Palm, Powell River, BC scored her first career CIS goal to give the Cascades the one goal lead.  The goal came off a corner kick set up by Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC.

The Timberwolves goalkeeper Jordan Hall, Prince George, BC kept UNBC in the match as she made several key saves to keep the match at one goal at the break.

In the second half, UNBC challenged UFV early but the Cascade defence led by second year goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC kept the young Timberwolves team off the scoreboard.  UFV would clinch the victory in the 75th minute as Danica Kump, Surrey, BC beat Hall to her left side.  The Cascades out shot UNBC 25 to 4 for the game.  Hall, the Timberwolves player of the match, recorded 15 saves.  Klim recorded three saves as she earned the opening night victory shutout.

Neeson was named UFV’s player of the match for controlling the midfield play all night.

“We got the result we wanted tonight.  Had we finished a few more of our chances we would have been able to play more of our reserves. Give UNBC all the credit for playing an excellent game,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.  “ I was very proud of our young team they did not get frustrated and showed a tremendous amount of maturity tonight.”
