Langley, BC…..The UFV Cascades were defeated tonight by the CIS number one ranked TWU Spartans, 2-1, in Langley , BC. The Cascades record falls to 1-1-1 for 4 points, as TWU ‘s record improves to 1-1-1 for 4 points. It is only the regular season meeting between the two rivals this year.
The Cascades started off strong and continued the great team play from Friday night in Vancouver. The UFV back seven were strong holding the defending national champions in check. Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC and Danica Kump, Surrey, BC tested the Spartans’ goalkeeper Rachel Bedek, London, Ontario early but could not find the back of the net. UFV continued to pressure the Spartans until midway through the half when TWU’s experience started to take over the match, controlling the midfield and moving the ball around the park like a veteran team. The Spartans hard work paid off in the 27th minute when Lindsey Pulice, Burnaby, BC set up Krista Gommeringer, Calgary, Alberta who beat UFV’s goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC to give the Spartans the one goal lead.
TWU continued to pressure the young Cascade defense and Natalie Boyd, Surrey, BC stole the ball from a Cascade midfielder and marched down the right side of the field making a beautiful pass to Alessandra Oliverio, Calgary, Alberta who scored what would turn out to be the game’s winning goal.
The second half started the way the first half ended with TWU pressuring the Cascades back seven. UFV would stand tall and defend well against the Spartan attack. Klim was solid in UFV’s net facing 21 shots on goal. Towards the later part of the second half, UFV mounted an attack and after forcing a corner kick, the Cascades would capitalize on a great set up by Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC to Lana Rockhill, North Vancouver, BC who scored her first goal of the regular season in the 90th minute.
As the final whistle blew, the Cascades gave a great effort just fell one goal short of a very good weekend against two of the top teams in Canada West.
“I thought we started the game well, we were assertive and intentional and then played the last part of the first half very poorly and were punished for it. Against a quality side like TWU we can’t afford to have a lull especially a lull that long. I am proud that we never quit and were able to get one late,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht. “Carley Radomski was once again a force in midfield, Kayla Klim was strong in goal and Danika Snook put in a very industrious 90 min.”
