Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Western Washington University Vikings (NCAA-Division2) 1-0, at Townsend Park in Chilliwack, BC. The Cascades improve their preseason record to 4-2-0 with one preseason match remaining on Sunday, September first, before the 2013 Canada West regular season opens next Friday against TWU Spartans, at Townsend Park.
The Cascades came out strong tonight and gave the WWU Vikings all they could handle for 90 minutes. UFV playing in their fourth match in four days showed they are fit for the regular season and played like they were in mid-season form, especially in the middle of the first half when the Vikings tested veteran goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC several times. Village did a great job of keeping the match scoreless until UFV was able to capitalize on the game’s first major foul at the 33rd minute of play. After the referee awarded UFV a direct shot outside the box for a late hit, veteran defender Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC made no mistake as he buried his shot in the upper right hand corner of WWU’s net beating goalkeeper Nico Terentjev, Mercer Island, WA cleanly.
The Cascades continued to pressure WWU in the second half trying to get that all important second goal, however the Vikings defense had other ideas. WWU forwards pressured the Cascade defense late in the match looking for the equalizer but UFV led by fourth year defender Ravi Singh, Abbotsford, BC held off the late charge to clinch the shutout win over their Bellingham opponents.
Village was named the Cascades “Player of the Match” for earning the shutout and recording 7 saves.
“We played a tremendous match considering how tired we were from the four day trip to Oregon and Washington,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington. “The Vikings are a good side and gave our team a good test as we get ready for next week’s conference opener against TWU.”

Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team fell to the Western Washington University Vikings tonight, 2-0, at Townsend Park, in Chilliwack, BC. The Cascades have two more exhibition games remaining before the Canada West regular season commences next Friday, September 6th when UFV hosts the UNBC Timberwolves at Townsend Park, in Chilliwack, BC.
Tonight’s game was very entertaining as UFV matched the WWU Vikings shot for shot and chance for chance in the first half. The Cascades veteran striker Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC looks like she is in mid-season form with her excellent play making ability tonight. Second year goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC starting her first home game as the Cascades undisputed number one goalkeeper played well making several early saves to keep the match scoreless at the break.
In the second half, UFV continued to play well holding off the more powerful Viking team. The visitors were able to break UFV’s defense down late in the game for two goals 15 minutes apart by Jessica Bertucci, Bellingham, WA and Kim Cooper, Bellingham, WA. Alyssa Beauchamp, Vancouver, WA and Miranda Head, Marysville, WA split the game in the Vikings net. Klim made two saves in UFV’s net.
The Cascades third year defender Jade Palm, Powell River, BC was named UFV’s “Player of the Match” for her strong play at midfield.
“We struggled at matching their physical play and never really got going. There were encouraging signs as well as signs that told me we still have quite a bit to work on, commented UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht. “Jade Palm and Carley Radomski were strong in midfield and Carly Neeson had her best game of our preseason. We are looking to hopefully getting a few players back from injury and making the final preparations for our Canada West season.”
